In normal day to day life the mind never rests, it is constantly ‘thinking’, continually working on the next problem, forever analysing, it is never blank, not even during sleep, where we dream, a restful or restless sleep.
Meditation is a holistic discipline by which the individual attempts to obtain a state of mind that is beyond that of ‘thinking’ by achieving a deeper state of relaxation or awareness. More recently, it has been welcomed into modern society, as a tool for relief in a stress-filled life. Where there are great effects from meditation, including the treatment of migraines, lowering blood pressure, decreasing stress on the heart, and strengthening the immune system.
Through the ages all religions have introduced ways and approaches in their own characteristic styles to help people practice meditation. As meditation has a spiritual element, it forms an integral part of religions.
Whether for prayer or to achieve clarity and awareness, meditation is a tool individuals can use on a regular basis.
The greatest misconception is that when participating in a meditation session, the ultimate outcome is always to obtain an altered state of mind or a ‘blank’ mind. This is typically not the case, especially while learning to meditate. The basic outcome of meditation is to train the mind to concentrate on one specific ‘thing’ (single-pointed meditation) in order to maintain a calm relaxed state.
As a calmer but not blank mind, a mind without the clutter and chit-chat, allows for you to connect with your higher self and intuition along with learning to channel. When the mind is free from our day to day chatter it is much easier to hear the voice within us.
By training ourselves to relax and breath, and rest our tired minds, we allow our own inner thoughts from our subconscious to rise to the surface.
Meditation enables us to move from higher frequency brain waves to lower frequency brain waves, this in turn activates different centres of the brain.
By learning to control our mind we can achieve slower wavelengths, which in turn gives more time between thoughts and allows us to choose the thoughts we wish to act upon.
